How do I register for GED classes?

You register for the GED classes by attending one of the  three (3) part Registration/Orientation sessions at Valley Forge High School or other sites offered throughout the year.  In order to become enrolled in the Parma ABLE GED program you must attend all three (3) parts of a Registration/Orientation session.  Students who do not attend all three (3) parts will not be permitted to participate in any class activities.  See the registration dates link on the GED home page or click here.

Where are the classes offered ?

Parma South Library (Monday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30) located at 7335 Ridge Road (near Pleasant Valley Road).

Valley Forge High School (Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00) located at 9999 Independence Boulevard (across from Tri-C Community College).

Remington College-Cleveland ( Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00 ) located at 14445 Broadway Avenue, Maple Heights (near the I-480 exit)...you must take the Official Practice Test before you will be admitted to class.  Call 216-584-2476 to register for the test.

Kaplan Career Institute (formerly Total Technical Institute) (Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00; the first two Saturdays of the month will have a review for the GED and official Practice test) located at 8720 Brookpark Road, Brooklyn (near Ridge Road)

Cuyahoga Community College-Western Campus (Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in Room WLA B200) located at the Pleasant Valley Road/ York Road intersection in Parma

Divinity Lutheran Church...summer classes in July and August (Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00) located at 11877 Blossom Avenue, Parma Heights

Why will I be tested?

During the registration process you will be given a short evaluation to determine your present academic skills.  The results will help the instructors place you in a classroom with other students who have the same level.  During the year you will be reevaluated to determine your progress and to assure that you are getting the best level of instruction possible.

What do I need to bring to registration?

Since this is a grant program that is offered to you at no cost, we are required to register you according to guidelines set by the United States Department of Education.  You will be asked to fill out a registration form that includes among other things, your social security number, current address and phone number, contact person in case of emergencies and any medical conditions that we need to be aware of.  You must also have a driver's license or state identification card. Who are the people who will be helping me?

The Parma ABLE (Adult Basic and Literacy Education) staff consists of very dedicated and experienced educators who want to help you attain your education goals.  Along with a Program Director and Site Facilitator, there are Educational Assistants, Orientation Assistants, Tutors, Counselors and Instructors available to make your classroom experience very enjoyable.  All the instructors are professional educators with one third of them having at least a Master's Degree.  Two thirds of them have five or more years of Adult Basic Education experience.  In order to be aware of current research and teaching techniques in their field, all staff members are required to attend professional development seminars yearly.

What will I be learning during the classes?

The classes are designed to acquaint you with the five areas of the GED test battery and test taking skills in general.  In addition to teaching you subject matter, you will be made aware of community resources that can help you in your preparation.  It is the mission of the Parma ABLE Program to provide quality educational programming for adults as they strive to reach their goals in their roles as learners, family members, citizens, and workers.

Who can register for these classes?

Listed below are the State of Ohio Age Requirements for issuing a GED-Ohio High School Equivalency Diploma.

3301-41-01  Standard for issuing an "Ohio High School Equivalence Diploma"

Eligibility: The minimum requirements for taking the tests of general educational development are: (1) the applicant must be officially withdrawn from school and (2) be nineteen years of age or older. However, exceptions to the age requirement may be granted as follows:

 (1) An applicant who is eighteen years of age is eligible if the class of which he/she was last a member has graduated; or

(2) An applicant who has been sworn into active military service in one of the armed forces is eligible if a statement, indicating the date of the swearing-in ceremony, is submitted with the application;

 (3) An applicant who is at least sixteen years of age, but is less than eighteen years of age, is eligible to take the tests with written approval from a parent, guardian or court official and the school superintendent or his/her designee, from where the applicant last attended school or presently resides; or

 (4) An applicant who has reached the age of majority (eighteen years old) is eligible with written approval from the superintendent or his/her designee, from where the applicant last attended school. The applicant may sign the approval form instead of the parent, guardian or court official.
