Kelly's class is working on a project which will educate them about the various states of our country.  After doing research on the Internet, the students learned how to display their project using a Power Point presentation. These pictures show the students in the computer lab working on their project with Kelly.

After much preparation, the students presented their state projects.  They shared the information about their chosen state using a Power Point presentation and the visual aids that they made.

As part of their community involvement project, the class participated in producing blankets that will be distributed to needy families in the community.

After all that hard work and a lesson on the Christmas tradition of the Gingerbread Man, a well deserved treat was shared by all.

Reggie arranged for four Normandy Senior High School students in the Dental Program to come to our class on March 3rd. They provided a wonderful presentation on taking care of your teeth, including demonstrations on how to properly brush and floss.  They talked about the importance of good nutrition, daily oral hygiene care, using a toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Approval, and visiting the dentist twice a year.   The class asked many interesting questions and were rewarded with their own toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss to help maintain a good oral hygiene program.

The EL/Civics field trip to Tri-C

What a wonderful field trip we had to Tri-C last night!.  Although the trip was scheduled from 7-7:30 p.m. we ended up being there until 8:45 p.m.  Dr. Susan Lohwater met us at the Information Desk in the "G" section.  Along with Dr. Lowater, Evgeny Kasperovic, Tri-C's student ambassador, did a fabulous job of providing a walking tour of all the departments and sections of the college.  We visited the new health profession area that is set up just like a working hospital with mechanical patients for students to practice on for those going into health professions.  We learned that students can actually learn how it is to deliver babies as well as practice on men/women, older people, etc. with medical conditions (all with life-like mechanical patients).  We also visited the art section where students were painting and working on graphic design.  We visited the theatre where students were rehearsing. He talked about all the coursees available, including Sciences of chemistry, biology, physics, math (and we learned of the free tutoring available to help with subjects students are having troule in).  Evgany took us down to the athletic area where students were about to start a basketball game.  We were able to view the swimming pool.  We were taken to the business area where students learned they would get their identification and pay tuition, and were taken to where the guidance counselors offices are located.  We learned about financial aid, about pre-testing and all received a packet of information with registrations and other materials about the college.  He showed us the cafeteria as well as the vending machines and talked about the parking at the college.

The evening ended on a very high note as we were invited to a special party all the ESL students were participating in as they just had their final exams that day.  There was food, dancing and singing.  We were welcomed by everyone and encouraged to help ourselves to the food and participate in singing or dancing.  It was fun to watch the students enjoy themselves.  One of Tri-C's students has a Masters Degree in Music and she performed for us...beautiful voice.  She sang in Russian and then sang part of an Opera.  So very special...extremely talented.

This was truly an experience my E.L. Civics students will NEVER forget.  They loved it.  I encourage other classes to contact Tri-C.  I think GED students would definitely benefit and realize there is more out there for them that they just don't realize.  A little encouragement sometimes will spark a flame that will ignite enthusiasm, and then they are hooked!  Please suggest to others to take their classes.  It was truly an outstanding field trip.  One I will NEVER forget!  AWESOME!!!!
