English in the Community students Awilda and Lillian, as well as instructors Christine and Mary Kay, enjoy a tasty treat of caramel apples as they celebrate Halloween. The making of the apples was part of a lesson on following directions and the use of ordinal numbers (first, second, third). Carving pumpkins was a highlight of the Halloween lesson. Student Lillian had never carved one before, but she was faster and more skillful than Christine and Mary Kay. Each pumpkin was carved to represent a different emotion. A Halloween poem was the final activity of the lesson where students used adjectives, gerunds, and synonyms, plus pictures to describe the holiday.
The Holiday seasons were filled with activities as the class showed their artistic and baking skills.
The Thankful Acorn allowed us share those things we are thankful for.
Baking Christmas cookies was fun....especially when we got to sample them!!
Who would have thought we could make ornaments out of applesauce!
Holiday cards and Christmas bingo sharpened our writing and math skills...well sort of!
Just to be sure it was not ALL play, we worked at our memory interview.
Here are pictures of the students as they shared their presentations on the different states in America.
The Ohio State University Extension Office has been providing a five week long class on nutrition. Each week the instructor, Angelica, teaches a different concept on the subject nutrition.
Each class includes periods of active movement and healthy snacks. I wonder if the students used their knowledge of good nutrition to help plan the Valentine's Day party we all enjoyed?
Our Easter lesson included discussions about the symbols of spring, the religious and commercial aspects of Easter. and Easter traditions in various countries. Part of our lesson involved the coloring of traditional Easter eggs.
